Mastering the Method 16-18 Worldwide

Listen, are you breathing just a little and calling it a life?
— Mary Oliver

While many Awareness Through Movement® classes put respiration front and center, breath is rarely the theme of a Functional Integration® lesson.

When giving an individual Feldenkrais® session, you may monitor your student’s breath (and your own), tune into the subtle shifts of disturbance or unease, and register the respiratory responses that indicate improvement and integration.

But what about giving lessons that make breathing better?

How, specifically, do we address the ribs, spine, muscles of the trunk, and so on?

Which Feldenkraisian tactics are most effective for unraveling the restrictions that limit respiration?

BREATHING BETTER reveals the answers to these questions — and much more — in a comprehensive, engaging, and well-paced format. Going beyond the limitations imposed by distance, this updated year-long course uses Zoom and online learning to create an enhanced training experience.

The program is for Feldenkrais teachers who want to:

  • Understand the function and structure of respiration.

  • Clear up common confusions and stubborn superstitions.

  • Uncover the ins and outs of optimal breathing.

  • Receive personal coaching and individual support.

  • Expand the repertoire of lessons you can count on to work.

  • Give meaningful, memorable FI® lessons in person and online.

BREATHING BETTER greatly exceeds my expectations for advanced Functional Integration training. Larry continuously surprises me with the friendly group activities and personal reflection tasks he proposes because they are delightful, enlivening, and personally relevant for me as a new practitioner.

I appreciate how we take the time to explore core ATM® lessons in multiple dimensions and interactively explore the ideas with a partner in FI practice. The virtual training format works very well!

Larry is a treasure of experience, skill, and genuine insights. He exemplifies the fuller potential of this practice for me.  I especially appreciate Larry’s ability to listen, clarify, and confirm key concepts and skills in a way that brings them to life in my daily life and as part of my aspiration to live the practice.

Module 16
FLOATING ON AIR

Returning to your body its ability to breathe
the way it is designed.

— Moshe Feldenkrais

In this module, you’ll learn about the structure and function of breathing in detail and from the pattern perspective. You’ll develop a sense of the significant specifics and how they fit together systemically. We’ll define what good breathing is, identify what interferes with it, and explore exactly how to elicit your student’s innate ability to breathe easily.

Module 17
THE TURNING TIDE

Life is always at some turning point.
— Irwin Edman

This module will deepen your appreciation of how posture and action influence breathing — and vice versa — and how habit hinders adapting respiration to activity and ambience. By learning a classic FI composition, you’ll improve your understanding of Moshe’s method and your ability to use it to restore robust respiration.

Module 18
THE WINDS OF CHANGE

Fear is excitement without the breath.
— Fritz Perls

Breathing is integral to how we move, think, and feel. This module reveals how to work with the ways we unconsciously carry the consequences of accidents, illness, and trauma with us. You’ll find out how to help your students uncover these deep and often troubling connections in a manner that makes it possible to disengage from the restrictions and reconnect with their potential to be present and respond in the moment.

In BETTER BREATHING, the time-tested MASTERING THE METHOD postgrad FI master class series takes a deep dive into what it means to work with the breath in a Feldenkraisian way.

During each of the three modules, you learn one specific, particularly practical Functional Integration strategy. The first lesson lays the groundwork by clarifying how the actions of the spine, ribs, breastbone, and the diaphragm and other muscles drive inhalation and exhalation, the second FI is about working with the dynamics of breathing, and the third and final one further illuminates the interactive interrelations of respiration.

  • Over two three-day master classes spaced a month apart, you get to know and understand how this lesson’s techniques and tactics develop a thorough understanding of how and why this FI works.

    • You learn the complete scope of the lesson, explore its applications, and adopt best practices.

    • You do that by watching demonstrations, experiencing relevant Awareness Through Movement lessons, practicing the fundamental skills with your classmates, unpacking the lesson’s structure and strategy, receiving feedback and coaching, and getting your questions answered.

  • For your continued learning, you also receive access to recordings of the module and transcripts of the ATM classes.

  • To consolidate and integrate what you’ve been practicing, one month after the master classes, we will get together to review the lesson and refine your skills and understanding.

  • So that you can learn from and with your classmates, you also get the chance to participate in online study group meetings.

  • With each module, you also receive an individual FI tutorial with Larry so that you can get the personal coaching and individual support needed to make the lesson yours.

FI tutorials are one of the unique — and uniquely beneficial — features of the BREATHING BETTER program. Your tuition includes three tutorial sessions, one to go with each of the three modules.

Any time after the first three-day master calls, you can sign up for one of these hour and 20-minute individual coaching sessions with Larry. During these sessions, you give the FI, or work on sections of it, over Zoom or, if you prefer, you can review a video of you doing the lesson. Either way, Larry will observe, answer your questions, and offer feedback and suggestions in real-time. You get to set the agenda according to your interests and needs.

Usually, the other participants are invited to attend these tutorials as observers. It’s up to you whether your classmates are there and if they get to view the recording of the tutorial; either way, you get the video of the session to support your continued learning.

If you’re curious about what happens during a tutorial session, we made a 21-minute summary video of the session shown in the short clip above. This overview features some of the highlights of what happened during the session, including Larry’s answer to the question: “What’s the difference between physical therapy and Moshe’s method?

Sensing breathing during lessons provides potent feedback for the client and the practitioner. Following BREATHING BETTER, I have become more tuned into breathing while teaching ATM and FI

To my surprise, I had the same experience when we had to move the program online.

Dissecting an Awareness Through Movement lesson, finding the ways in which breathing changes because of it, and then applying the ideas to FI is a fascinating experience. We had multiple iterations in which to play with the lesson, learn from each other, and gain from Larry’s ability to articulate clearly the dance between detail and big picture. In addition, the one-on-one coaching provided personal guidance and helped to elucidate glitches.

I have been studying with Larry over the past ten years because he has mastered how to make lessons immediately applicable for each student’s learning.

As a student in my last year of training, my focus has been on developing FI skills. Despite prevailing concern that virtual learning of FI is not effective, Larry disproved such beliefs.  Larry’s radical approach to teaching hands-on FI virtually lives up to the principle of possibility. It is not a question of whether it is possible . . . but how.

His determination and enthusiasm shine through. True to the tenets of the Feldenkrais Method®, Larry has transformed the online format into an asset. Larry’s teaching approach is incredibly constructive and helpful. He focuses on process, demonstrating how FI is not only about person-to-person contact, but that it’s also about how one uses themselves, what one can be connecting to or “asking” as they enter into the conversation with the client, and where one’s awareness is directed. Larry effectively breaks an FI into relatable aspects and, slowly and incrementally, adds each section. I found myself able to discern the parts, connect them to the whole, and deconstruct the whole to the parts. The training was, in essence, a detailed FI about FI.
