Feldenkrais Training in New York City

Can I Make A Living?

The New York Feldenkrais Teacher Training is committed to preparing trainees to practice the method. After graduation, teachers have applied Feldenkrais methodology to such fields as physical and occupational therapy, neuromuscular rehabilitation, gerontology, ergonomic, special education, massage, psychotherapy, speech pathology, coaching and sports training, equestrian education, martial arts, dance, music, and theatrical and circus arts. Around the world, Feldenkrais teachers work in an incredibly wide spectrum of settings, from academic institutions to private practice, from rehabilitation clinics to schools, community centers to conservatories. Teachers work alone or group practices in rehabilitation, sports and arts. They teach public classes in their own centers and in places such as gyms, clinics, dance studios, dojos and yoga schools. Classes are taught in anywhere from the factory floor to a senior center. Typical rates for individual lessons range from $50 to $175 and a group class costs between $8 to $20, depending, of course, on where you live and practice. The NYFTT prepares you for practicing the method by offering far more than the basics of teaching through talk and touch.

  • From the moment you start learning hands-on work, we address biomechanics and self-care so that you learn how to give Functional Integration lessons safely and effectively.
  • Learning to become a teacher takes more than showing up for class. Through homework, study groups and online resources, we support your ongoing learning between class meetings.
  • While trainings often stop addressing the development of Awareness through Movement teaching skills after the second year, we continue to this important work. For example, in the third year we ask you to do a community-based externship. This is a crucial stepping stone from practicing to teach classmates and friends to introducing yourself in your community.
  • Through in-class exercises, homework assignments, writing and role-plays, you learn fundamentals about teaching inspiring classes, developing a successful practice and speaking clearly about the method. Our carefully sequenced training process takes you from being someone intrigued by the method to becoming a capable teacher, ready to offer the method and its benefits to others. You learn the full range of skills, abilities and understanding needed to present the method to your neighbors and to special audiences in compelling and useful ways. As you prepare to take the method into the world, your interests, background and creativity combine to develop your own unique way to make a living helping others learn and change.
